“Sweet Styles to Brighten Up Your Business”
If you’re reading this post, you can thank Amber-Ray Davidson, founder of HoneyYellow Design. I’ve known Amber for more than 10 years (almost 15!) so when I launched my freelance Proofreading and Spreadsheets service at the start of National Black Business Month and Amber reached out in regards to helping with “any graphic/web design needs,” I immediately took her up on that!

Initially, I just wanted to discuss branding and logo development because I already had experience creating web pages; after all, I’d just made one for Reads & Sheets. But after I ran into difficulty getting a blog set up just how I wanted it, I inquired about web design too. And let me tell you: I have zero regrets!

Here’s how it went. First, I checked out the HoneyYellow Design website and looked through Amber’s portfolio. (I did this out of sheer curiosity, but you should always look at prospective designers’ portfolios to make sure they’re a good fit for you!) I filled out the contact form and soon received an email to set up an “exploration meeting” with Amber. I went ahead and scheduled it, and during the meeting, we talked about what exactly I was aiming to do, what I had already done, and what I might need in terms of web design and branding. The best part about this meeting is that it allowed me to talk it through objectively and brought up some aspects that I hadn’t thought of or considered. (And for that I am immensely grateful!) A couple of days later – literally two – I received the Project Brief which included a quote, laid out everything we’d discussed (timelines, payment due dates, deliverables, etc.), and detailed terms and conditions.

Once we got all that out of the way, the fun part began! She shared a deliverable tracker (loved that!) wherein every step was laid out and notes or comments could be left. Working with Amber was a breeze – she linked documents, drafts, and other elements in the tracker, I gave feedback, rinse and repeat. I went from being stressed about creating something that would be worthwhile to being excited about my vision again. I think the logo creation and choosing the color scheme were the most fun, and I particularly liked the process for each.
Amber was very professional, easy to work with, and timely (that last part was especially appreciated as I had an admittedly short timeframe) and I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty pleased with the final products! Most of all, though, I appreciate that Amber didn’t just finish the project, hand over the files, wash her hands of me, that’s it. Not only did she schedule a follow-up meeting to walk me through some of the more detailed features of the site she’d built for me, but I know that if I ever have any more questions, she’ll be available.
So, Amber, if you’re reading this, THANK YOU. And don’t think you’re rid of me so soon — this is just the start.
